Writing Dice Game PLUS Tips to Encourage More Writing

Estimated read time 3 min read

We love games and games that get us writing are even more treasured! Today I have a rather easy game to prepare and use that can be repeated over and over again throughout the year.

To make this writing dice game you will need:

  • 1 wooden block plus black marker
  • Sheets of paper
  • Stickers (I have used animal prints and apples)
  • Bic Pens or Pencils

Sand your wooden block if needed to make a smooth surface and less sharp edges. Use your black marker and draw various lines, zigzag and bump combinations on the sides.

Stick the paws down one side of the page and the apples down the other. The aim is that the child has to draw the pattern rolled in order to help the animal (depicted as a paw here) get to the apples.

I love this game because it helps with drawing patterns and pencil grip. Not only that but did you know that sticking stickers is a fine motor skill? Which is a precursor to writing!

This is a great one to keep doing monthly to see how the kids improve in their writing control and skills.

Another idea we are currently using with my 6 year old is to provide a booklet for him to draw in. He has been using it as a creative outlet as well. A twist on this is to also use a notebook as a daily visual journal.

Below you can see he drew a scare crow for this day. Your child can either draw his days activity to recap or if they happen to draw something random you could base an activity off of it or look it up to learn more about it.

Sometimes notebooks are boring. Take this opportunity to spice up a dull notebook and make it exciting for your child to use. Cover the notebook in paper then stick their favorite characters on the cover! This creates a special book that is sure to be used.

Those stickers we used are also great for other fine motor and writing work! Here my young preschooler stuck star stickers all over a page. I encouraged her to join the stars up by connecting them with a line.

Don’t worry too much if after a while the page looks like this! Creative expression is just as important. 😉
