Itch, scratch… nobody likes mosquitoes. The buzzing, the biting, the flying around in  your face, leaving welts all over your limbs. But if you are gonna study them and what makes them buzz like we did in this fable- Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears, you might as well make it fun- and this Mosquito Egg Carton Craft happens to buzz too!

Mosquito Egg Carton  Craft

Why  Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears is a classic  folktale written by Verna Aarderma and explains why mosquitoes do what they do best (well second best). It helps kids to understand that there are consequences from our behaviors like lying in a attention catching way.

What you will need:

  • Egg carton (2 “cups”)
  • Straw
  • 4 Pipe cleaners
  • Craft foam
  • Google eyes
  • Hole punch
  • glue
  • Scissors

Use the hole punch to make a hole in each end of the egg carton strip, and 3 on each side for the legs to go through. If you don’t have one you can use a pencil or screwdriver to carefully poke the holes.

Bend one pipe cleaner in half to make it sturdier  and thread it through from one side to the other, repeat for the 3 legs. Bend and shape it on each side to make them resemble legs.

Glue google eyes on the front of your mosquito.

Slide the straw through the hole at the front so the bendy side is in the front, thread it through to the back hole.

Cut out small wings from craft foam and secure with glue on the back of your mosquito.

Cut the the straw coming out the back end so that there is about 2” sticking out of your mosquito body.

Your child can hum into the straw to mimic a  mosquito’s buzzing sound, share some mosquito science facts with your child as they play with their creation. Here are a few points to get you started…

  • Mosquitoes use their 6 needle like mouth parts to draw blood when they “bite”.
  • Only female mosquitoes feed on blood.
  • The reason they drink blood is to up their iron and protein to lay eggs.
  • There are more than 3,500 species of mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito is Spanish for little fly.

This little mosquito craft is so cute that you will ALMOST forget how annoying their real counterpart is, okay maybe not, but you won’t have to swat this one away.
